Small Animal Exotics

Enrol on this course

Price: £234.00

Who simply MUST attend?

  • This course if for the general practitioner, both experienced and new graduates will benefit. It is aimed at any vet that would like to become more confident in their abilities to understand and treat the exotic mammal patients in their practice.

What is Different About This Course?
  • This course offers a great practical component which is missing from many courses. It will also work through some case-based scenarios that vets will commonly encounter in practice. Compared with many available courses, we will cover some of the more commonly presented exotic mammals in addition to rabbits and rodents (eg African pygmy hedgehogs).

What Changes Can Delegates Expect As A Result Of The Course?
  • Delegates can expect to become more confident in dealing with exotic mammals which in turn will inspire confidence in their exotic-owning clients.

What Are the Likely Benefits to The Business?
  • The exotic pet market in the UK is a neglected sector. Owners will frequently consult forums rather than vets because of their lack of faith in our knowledge. By undertaking this course, these clients are more likely to seek veterinary advice improving their pet's welfare and the practice's turnover in this area which is often untapped.

    Programme overview
  • The course is based on the British Veterinary Zoological Society's first day competencies list.

By the end of the course, the students should be able to
  • Identify, handle and examine common exotic mammal species
  • Understand the husbandry, management and feeding of common exotic mammal species and how this can impact on welfare and disease
  • Have knowledge of the common diseases, how to investigate and treat them
  • Be confident in administering first aid to exotic mammal species including when and how to euthanase
  • Deliver safe anaesthesia and sedation of exotic mammal species.
